State lawmakers from both the House and Senate are proposing legislation, in a bipartisan effort, to remove that barrier to employment.

Jennifer Bukowsky, a criminal defense attorney in Columbia, brought the issue to Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch, R-Hallsville, and Sen. Caleb Rowden, R-Columbia. Bukowsky said she’s seen the current law create large barriers for her clients trying to re-enter society and support themselves and their families.
