After more than seven months in the Boone County Jail for his part in the Jan. 2 shooting death of 23-year-old Dontay Tolston, Derrick Q. Copelin pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge and was sentenced to time served.
Charged with second-degree murder initially, Copelin, 17, pleaded guilty to one count of felony possession of a controlled substance and was given a 180-day sentence. Booked into the jail on Jan. 12, Copelin has served in excess of the sentence.
Jimiah A. Lambert, 20, pleaded guilty Aug. 18 to voluntary manslaughter, unlawful use of a weapon and felony possession of a controlled substance for shooting Tolston during a botched drug deal. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
